Teaching in Alberta’s Outcome-Based Curriculum
Alberta’s education system is built on a foundation of clearly articulated learning outcomes that describe what students should know and be able to do upon completing a course or grade level. The Alberta Programs of Study provide detailed outcomes in core subject areas, organized by grade level, and teachers are entrusted with significant professional autonomy in how they help students achieve those outcomes.
This outcome-based approach gives Alberta teachers flexibility. You might teach the same outcomes as a colleague in another school or district, but your instructional strategies, classroom activities, and assessment approaches might look quite different. That flexibility reflects the trust Alberta places in teachers as professionals who understand their students’ needs and can make informed instructional decisions.
Alberta’s education system has also been responsive to calls for modernization. Recent updates to Alberta Programs of Study in various subject areas reflect contemporary research in pedagogy, the importance of Indigenous perspectives in education, and the skills students need for success in the 21st century. As an Alberta teacher, you’re working within a curriculum framework that continues to evolve.
This resource directory brings together materials specifically designed for Alberta teachers. You’ll find resources aligned with Alberta Programs of Study, subject-specific materials organized around Alberta’s outcomes, professional development opportunities for Alberta educators, and connections to Alberta’s active teaching community.
About Alberta’s Education System
Alberta’s curriculum framework is organized around clearly defined Program of Study documents for each subject area and grade level. These outcomes specify what students should be able to do, with varying levels of detail depending on the subject and grade. Some programs are very specific about required content; others provide broader frameworks that allow teachers to select appropriate contexts and content.
This outcome-based approach differs from some other Canadian provinces. Rather than focusing on specific content coverage, Alberta’s Programs of Study ask: What should students be able to do? What knowledge, skills, and attitudes do they need? How will we know they’ve achieved the outcomes? This philosophical approach shapes how teachers plan, instruct, and assess in Alberta classrooms.
Alberta has also made concerted efforts to include Indigenous perspectives throughout the curriculum and to ensure that all students, including English Language Learners and students with diverse learning needs, have access to high-quality instruction and support. Resources addressing inclusive practice, Indigenous education, and differentiated instruction are important parts of Alberta’s teaching resource landscape.
